En 1912, Dunand apprend les techniques de la laque avec le maître laqueur japonais Seizo Sugawara qui avait travaillé avant avec Eileen Gray. Dans les années 1930, l’artiste reçoit plusieurs commandes de panneaux en laque pour la décoration de paquebots comme l’Atlantique ou le Normandie.
Dunand est nommé président de la section laque de l’Exposition Internationale à Paris et décore en 1939 le Pavillon de la France à l’Exposition Internationale de New-York.

In 1912, Dunand learned the techniques of lacquer with the Japanese master Seizo Sugawara who had worked before with Eileen Gray. In the 1930s, the artist received several orders for lacquered panels for the decoration of steamers such as the Atlantic or Normandy. Dunand was appointed president of the lacquer section of the International Exhibition in Paris and decorated in 1939 the Pavillon de la France at the International Exhibition in New York.
